- Even if you are using AA, the car will see it was an iPhone running CarPlay
- Don't plug other USB devices into the Carlinkit for power. It will cause the Carlinkit to be a bit flakey and not always work properly.
- Multiple devices can be managed and will be listed when everything powers up. If you don't make a choice, the last used device will automatically connect if it is present.
- Make sure you plug the Carlinkit into the same USB port you would for wired CarPlay. Some cars have multiple USB ports and some of them are only for power.
- If you don't get a red light on the Carlinkit device, your phone will never connect and AA/CarPlay will never come up. Once AA/Carplay is running, the light turns green. No light coming on? Check the things I've mentioned. For instance, if you plug the Carlinkit into a USB power outlet that doesn't support Carplay, the Carlinkit light will never come on, red, green, or otherwise.

I discovered the convenience of wireless Android Auto with my 2023 Honda Civic Si. To make things completely wireless, I upgraded to wireless charging from CarQiWireless (search for it here on Amazon).
My kids drive older Honda Civics (2019 hatchback and 2020 Si) with support wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. A Civic enthusiast forum I participate in mentioned a product from Carlinkit that would convert wired AA/Carplay to wireless. Along with a wireless charging kit, this could give them the full wireless experience also! Not having to fuss with wires while driving makes things much safer, especially for younger drivers.
My kids use iPhones, but my wife and I are Android users, so I was quite intrigued when I found they had a product that supported both! Our kids are in school so there are occasions when we use their cars.
The device is very small and the supplied wire is high quality and is the perfect length. I easily tucked everything away in a compartment behind the center console.
I started setting it up for Android Auto. My confusion started when the car registered the Carlinkit device as a Carplay device. I wanted to use Android Auto, so how could I disable Carplay in the car? What made it more confusing was when my phone connected via AA yet the car said I was using Carplay.
After doing some research, I learned that the device behaves like an iPhone running Carplay to the car. If you are using AA, it converts AA to Carplay!! That seems a bit kludgy, but it does work!! What I thought was a problem wasn't one.
Having to plug in both the Carlinkit device and the wireless charging kit, I was happy when I found somebody online that said they just plugged their wireless charger into the other end of the Carlinkit. That saved me a socket so that was how I set it up. However...I found that intermittently the device wouldn't come up and I sometimes had to reboot the infotainment system in the car. While troubleshooting, I found that if I unplugged the wireless charging device from the Carlinkit, the Carlinkit came up! So now I have the wireless charging kit plugged into it's own socket. **Don't plug anything else into the Carlinkit in the car!**
The Carlinkit documentation doesn't say you can do what I was trying to do, but they don't say you can't either. It puts less stress on the device so that's OK.
Another source of confusion was how to deal with multiple people in the car with phones that are connected to the Carlinkit. When it first connects, a menu pops up that allows you to choose from a list of devices. If you don't make a selection, it will eventually connect to the last device that was used. Once connected, there is no way to go back into the menu and select another device without turning the car off/on or unplugging the Carlinkit and plugging it back in. That means you can't easily give your friends Aux in the car. A bit of a bummer, though I can live with it given the tremendous convenience given otherwise.
Part of how I figured a lot of this out was by going through video tutorials and FAQs on the manufacturer's website. They do provide a lot of good information there in contrast to the severely lacking documentation in the box.
So...once I worked past all of this, it works great!! There is no lag when using the touchscreen. Audio sounds great. It works just as well as it does in my car with wireless AA built in! If anything changes with how happy I am with this device (I am writing this on 04/25/23) , I will come back and update my review.
As is well documented, this thing is slow to start up. I'm usually well on my way by the time it finally connects, which is a nuisance. I would rather pay more and have something that connects within 10s of turning the car on. That said, on wired carplay, carplay would frequently crash/disconnect. For some reason with this unit, carplay is rock solid. Once it connects, it works for the entire drive, which is truly shocking. I figured it would be less reliable than wired.
That said, I do have one semi-major complaint about it. When this is plugged in, USB drives and bluetooth do not work on the headunit. That is to say, if you wanted to swap between carplay and a USB drive or someone else's bluetooth phone, you could not. I don't personally care about BT, but I do have a lot of stuff saved on a USB drive, and I like to occasionally switch between this and my phone. I cannot do this as long as the carlinkit is plugged in.
**Update**
My unit originally had old firmware on it from Dec2022. Despite all the firmware update warnings, I easily updated the firmware to the latest firmware and now it connects within about 10-30s of the headunit turning on instead of like 1-3 minutes, i.e. 6x faster. Still not as quick as a dedicated headunit with wireless carplay, but no longer a deal breaker.
In the process of the OTA firmware update, I also learned that there is a beautiful settings page that allows you to customize things like the device's name, so it now says "WRX-CARPLAY" on the connect screen instead of "SUBARU-0C2B" or whatever it was before.
*Update 2*
Coming up on a year, and it's still going strong. Very happy with it following the aforementioned firmware update, it has never disconnected or failed to connect within ~10-20s.
