Interactive Horror Movie/Series?
4 Stars
Interactive Horror Movie/Series?
This is an choose-your-own-adventure, interactive quick time event (QTE), dialogue choice driven game like ‘Until Dawn’, ‘Detroit Become Human’, Tell Tale Walking Dead series, ‘Life is Strange’ series, etcYou play 9 teens trying to survive haunted Hackett's Quarry Summer Camp full of supernatural monsters and crazy locals--Story/Plot:Laura and Max took camp counselor job at Hackett's Quarry Summer Camp for kids. On the way their the see something on the road and swerve out of the road. The sheriff checks up on them and tells them to stay in a hotel for the night before heading to Hackett’s Quarry. They ignore him and go to Hackett’s Quarry. Laura checks out the sound they heard in the basement, finds out it’s a monster and the sheriff helps take it out.A few months later, the 7 other counselors arrive at Hackett Quarry and finish off their job as counselors. They are stuck at camp the last day they’re supposed to leave. That’s when monsters, the supernatural, and locals start attacking.Starts off pretty slow getting to know all the characters, but it gets very engaging as the story progresses as there’s a mystery to solve. Fun to piece it together yourself as you play/watch10 chapters to play through. Spanning average 1 hour per chapter (unless you purposefully skip collectables)--Presentation:Graphics are good. Can get into uncanny valley at times when body and faces don’t match up, but overall look is excellent. Music and lighting is really good at building tension/atmosphereHave some Hollywood actors you’ll notice. Great performances throughout. Teens act realistically. Can be stereotypical at first, but as you get to know them they get more complex--Gameplay:Less interactive than the games I’ve mentioned at the start of the review. Very story focused. Despite this, choices are more impactful than other gamesNo difficulty setting, but there’s accessibility options to extend the time of QTEs, dialogue choices, etcSome failed QTE events don’t necessarily lead to deathWhen there is a character death, the game lets you rewind time to retry if you want (mode unlockable after completing the game once)If you just want to experience the story, there is a movie mode where you just watch the game choosing story where everyone dies, everyone lives, or customize each character personalities (how they react under pressure, how they act in conversations, how well they do in combat, and how observant they are to the environment) to see how it plays outMovie mode is like binging a Netflix seriesThere is exploration segments. Like other games of this genre, the walking controls are very stiff and unnatural72 collectables in the game ranging from clues, evidence and tarot cards. Not able to collect them all in single playthrough as there are branching paths. Need replay entire game from chapter 2 to get them all. When collecting tarot cards; you turn them in to this physic witch and she gives you hints of the future which is pretty neat on your first play throughStory is very engaging first play through, but can be a chore if you’re going for the platinum trophy as there’s no option to skip for fast foward long scenes. There’s no branching trees you can look at, and as mentioned before collectables are not saved overall (must replay at least 2x from basically the beginning)-PSN trophiesEasy platinum, but very time consuming. Most of them are for completing the chapter. Other are collectables to gather, specific decisions during the story, and having everyone survive. Not able to get all trophies in one playthrough. No guide, checklist, or roll-over progress making repeat play throughs a chore. To get a perfect run on certain trophies requires an online guide as it’s very difficult to decipher yourself. No save transfer with trophy auto pop up for Ps4/PS5For PS5; it's slightly better graphics and instant load times. No adaptive triggers or haptic feedbackOverall, very fun choose-your-own adventure game if you want to play through a horror movie series. If you’re a completionist (want that platinum trophy), the game doesn’t respect your time.
