The controls are easy to use. It only took a few times with the manual to use it properly and pack the manual away.
The crisper rack is different than what I'm used to and I like it.
It's big. And it's heavy. I don't leave appliances on the counter, and I found that it's a chore to lug this out when needed. But I don't use it often.
Another reviewer mistakenly said that the temp for steaming was just 212 and would require longer steaming periods. But that's false. The team for steam IS just 212 so a higher temperature is not required. I found that steaming veg was easy and the clean-up was easy, too. However, if I'm just going to steam something, I find it's easier just to pull out a saucepan with a steamer insert rather than take the GoWise out of the pantry.
Overall I like it.
Once nice feature is that the frying tray has legs on the bottom of it, like a steamer bowl, so that you can raise the food to get closer to the heating elements. There’s no need to put water under the cooking tray to use the steam feature. One thing though is that because the steam mode has a max temperature setting of 212, it takes longer than you might normally expect to steam vegetables.
Our old fryer/toaster oven recently broke, and we were looking for a replacement. This fryer can also steam vegetables, which is an added bonus. It’s a little smaller than we are used to, but it has enough room for most food. For example, we used to heat up whole pizzas in our old unit, which due to size limitations is a non-starter here.
We’ve found it helpful, as far as cleaning goes, to use disposable air fryer parchment paper so that the food doesn’t get basked onto the pan. The problem with air fryers, at least for us, is once food gets stuck on the pan grate, it gets the annoying burnt smell that’s impossible to get rid of absent a thorough cleaning and scrubbing. Paper liners are pretty cheap and hold up to being baked really well. We use size 8.4 inch paper liners, and it works way better than foil because the food doesn’t stick to air fryer parchment paper like it sometimes does with foil.
The steamer uses a refillable water tank that mounts above the fryer. There is also a self-cleaning feature; however, that is only for the water tank. It’s basically is to clean out mineral deposits. As far as cleaning the frying tray, the bottom portion is removable which makes cleanup easy and you can also stick it in a dishwasher.
The frying aspect is pretty good as far as temperature control, and keeps food nice and crisp without charring it. Another nice feature is that there are pre-set cooking modes, for example if you select chicken, it will give you 20 minutes at 370. This is a good setting for frozen breaded chicken strips. If you’re just reheating something you’d have to make manual adjustments. For example, I’ve found that reheating KFC wedge fries and chicken only takes 5 minutes on the chicken setting. We’ve also cooked a whole onion in there, and it had done a good job heating it up throughout.
You’re also supposed to keep it at least 6 inches away from the wall to prevent heat damage to the tiles or grout lines, and to ensure proper airflow and ventilation.
I think that the pricing seems a bit high though, especially since comparable-sized air fryers typically cost less than $100. So there seems to be a really big premium on the steam fry component. It’s hard to estimate a value for this feature though, because there are so few comparable products currently available that does what this product does.
In summary, this is an a really good at frying and steam frying. The steamer is so-so, but I have no real complaints about this product. I think the pricing might be a little on the higher end ($179), but this is an established manufacturer in this industry so some amount of price premium is to be expected for brand name recognition. Overall, I’m definitely satisfied with the performance. I’d also recommend getting paper parchment liners for it; they will save a lot of time on cleaning and maintenance.
