A year ago, I agonized over which Firestick product would be best for me. I decided that forward-thinking would be best and went with the 4K Firestick, even though nothing is broadcast or streamed in 4K YET. It turns out that embracing the newest technology is a huge trade-off. Sound, picture quality, bells and whistles are great, BUT ... FYI: 4K IS A BANDWIDTH HOG!!!!!!!! It doesn't matter what your speed is. It could be 200 Mb and you'd still have buffering and dropped connectivity issues. What matters is how many connected devices you have along with other wireless connections near you. HARD LESSON LEARNED: THE RING DOORBELL is a signal thief and only before and after the one nearest me was installed/uninstalled could I watch anything on the 4K Stick for more than a few seconds or minutes at a time.
So, when Amazon offered this Lite version of Firestick at an unbeatable sale price, I was torn about whether to even bother with it or just bite the bullet and buy a second 4K Stick. I mean, if the 4K is an issue, the Lite version had no hope. Right? WRONG! I figured the Lite version might just be less of a drag on bandwidth and speed, and it is. I've been running it straight for almost 24 hours hours I've been live steaming TV and playing movies and shows on Prime, Netflix, Starz, Pluto, CBS All Access, etc. NOTHING HAS BUFFERED, STOPPED, STUTTERED, DROPPED THE CONNECTION. It reminds me of the old days when I stayed at 3 Mb when everyone else topped out at 15 and I streamed everything smoothly because I was the only car on the slower freeway so to speak, while everyone else was crammed into the newest, fastest highway.
Well, the Lite is pure DELIGHT. The same pieces as the other sticks: the stick, the extender, the adapter connector to the outlet, and the Alexa-enabled remote. This remote won't control the TV but it does everything I need. I prefer individual remotes anyway, and it's in the bedroom so any shortcomings won't matter. I never pre-link my Amazon devices, but setup is an easy snap. Just manually input the wireless Network key and you're set. Add the desired standalone apps you want and start streaming.
Some reviewers also complained about the unavailability of YouTube. It's on there. I'm not missing anything that I have with the 4K Stick, but I have gained the luxury of nonstop streaming which has been a setback for the 4K stick. Now I'm comparing the streaming on the 4K stick and any interruptions to the flawless run I've had on the Lite Stick. If it goes down as expected, I just may buy another Lite Stick and use it in the living room as well. the difference in sound and picture is negligible to me at this point without full 4K, and I want smooth streaming now more than a future benefit. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS STICK.
We already had a Roku premiere plus 4K unit however we get dozens of OTA channels with our antenna and wanted something that could put all our media in one spot, using one device. should also note we had a couple chromecast dongles as well.
The stick comes with what you need to get started. Batteries, charger, cable, hdmi connection and an hdmi extender for those who need one. If unsure how it all connects I included photos showing that. Ours was linked to our existing amazon account when it arrived. It was as simple to install as you could hope for, no rocket scientist needed so to speak.
We have streaming services like YouTube TV, Amazon Prime, Netflix, CBS all access, etc. As said we also get a lot of OTA channels using our antenna thanks to our signal amplifier. Once setup is complete by pressing the ‘tv with rabbit ears’ you will go to the channel guide section. There it starts out with the OTA channels, then YouTube TV and so on.
Also you have the ‘home’ button. That takes you to the main page showing all your media sources and recently used channels. There is a menu across the top with viewing options. On the far right as we have a recast device, there is DVR. So again everything all in one spot using one device, just what we wanted.
The remote response is fast, much more than expected. Compared to the Roku premiere plus 4K response times it is blazing fast which honestly that surprised me. that considering the Roku cost 6X what I paid for this stick. Picture quality to my eyes is no different than if viewing using the stock smart TV apps or Roku device.
Plenty of useful options and settings with the device. As mentioned we have the amazon recast and paired with this stick the two together are a wonderful. The first one worked so well I ordered a second for our mom. I only bring that up because she still cannot set the clock on her old VCR. Anything even remotely tech related means I get to do it for her.
This fire stick and the remote are so well designed I was able to give her one. It took me all of ten minutes to show her how to use it. since she not only can use the fire device, tv how she wants and when she wants but it also gave her a little positive, confidence boost being able to use tech that before was always too complicated for her to use.
The only minor negative is voice control. Sometimes it gets it right other times it doesn't but does get to the 'general neighborhood' so to speak.
We got both of ours when they were priced at seventeen bucks. Well worth it and then some in all of our opinions in this household. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to anyone. Those intimidated by tech or those like myself who simply want everything in one spot with one remote to access it all from.
