The Roomba (this specific model, as I haven't had an earlier version) not only works really well from a vacuuming perspective, but it has done a remarkable job learning the house. Until I saw it working its way around legs on chairs, and under things like our bed, I really hadn't thought about how detailed the map would have to be. It's still learning after multiple runs, but it has become noticeably quicker in how well it moves from place to place. I originally thought that it's somewhat random patterns of navigation would continue, but as it has learned that has given way to a much smoother transition from relatively straight runs across the room to diving under furniture. We decided to move the base station after the map was mostly complete, and I thought it might get confused. Nope. It figured out where it was and returned to the base station to dump the vacuum and charge itself up. It's really pretty slick how well it tracks where it is, and can scoot back to the base station when it needs to.
As for the vacuuming, we have two dogs, one of which is a retriever that sheds constantly, and two cats, one of which is a long-hair which leaves clumps of hair around randomly. We're constantly dealing with hair, tracked in dirt, and whatever cats leave on the floor occasionally. The Roomba has done a great job cleaning up after the endless tumbleweeds left by the dogs. I thought my wife would be annoyed by the noise (our only negative comment), but she's so happy with the floors that she's willing to work around that. The animals became oblivious to the Roomba within 15 minutes, and they now just stay out of its way. It's almost funny how oblivious they have become to it.
As to the noise, yeah, it can be noisy, but it sort of blends into the background. You can turn down the suction of the thing, but then what's the point? All in all, very pleased with the performance. We're still not running the mop unit, as we're trying to sort out the best place to put it, but that will be for another installment. Right now I highly recommend...we'll see if it holds up.
Minor Update, 6/24/2022: So far the Roomba is still doing a great job. I've started seeing a couple minor things that could use some work. First is the battery life. It seems to run well on the hardwood, but cleaning the bedroom, which is carpeted with a high pile carpet, really sucks the juice out of it. It will quit partway into the job and head home to dump the dirt and recharge. I would also like to see the controls moved to the cloud so that it could be managed remotely, or a couple people could manage it, i.e., my wife and me in this case. Maybe it has that flexibility and I haven't found it.
On the plus side, the app let me know that I needed to service the brushes, which was a snap--they pop right out. This sort of reminder for a machine that generally operates autonomously is great, as it might be overlooked otherwise.
Minor Update, 7/24/2022: As I mentioned before, the animals adapted to the Roomba very quickly. Today I watched our retriever not want to budge for the Roomba. So, it nudged its way around him, even nudging in between his spread out legs. I don't think it even touched the dog. While I realize that not all dogs will get this comfy with a gadget like this, after watching how the Roomba interacts with the animals, I'm even more sold on it. (I found one of the cats draped across the mop the other day while it was in the charging station. It seems these things have been assimilated into the pack of our critters.)
Minor Update, 3/25/2023: The Roomba continues to perform well. It's still working as advertised in terms of cleaning. I thought I might mention that it does have one quirk a regular vacuum does not: It can get lost. We've had a couple times now where the Roomba has managed to lock itself into a bathroom. It was trying to get behind the door and managed to push the door closed. We only found it when we noticed it hadn't returned to the charging station. It has also managed to get itself stuck behind the sofa. After a while it finally gave up trying to escape and shut down. Fortunately, it let the app know that it was stuck and needed help. I had to use the "find" feature in the app to figure out where it had gone. These are not show stoppers at all, but they are different problems than you might have with a standard vacuum--none of which I have had have ever taken off and gotten themselves lost or trapped.
Another Update, 1/6/2004, and my first critical comments: The Roomba is still working well, but after living with it, I do have a couple critical observations. 1. Comparing it to a regular vacuum, the Roomba is, honestly, more fragile. Vacuum cleaners are pretty simple devices--they suck up dirt. You either empty the canister or bag, and that's about it. The Roomba is more complex. The Roomba has sensors that detect when things are full of dirt (a plus, right?). Those can get dirty, and the Roomba may not want to launch until they've been cleaned. You actually have to manually clean the thing now and again. 2. The internal filter has to be replaced occasionally. The rollers and the edge brush wear out, and have to be replaced from time to time. which I mentioned above. The Roomba will let you know how much life you have left in these parts, but it's not just a "fire and forget" sort of device. 3. Also, because the Roomba takes off on its own, it can get lost or stuck. It's not a big deal, but it did manage to get itself stuck under a dresser, and had to be rescued. It does have a feature to locate it, so at least it's easy to find. So, do I still think it's a great gadget? Yes. That said, I sounded like a fan boy, and I thought it would be fair to show off a couple of its warts.
They are still going strong. Everything I said previously applies, and I'm just as satisfied if not more. Smart mapping is still problematic. The Roomba and Braava don't share maps. So each one has to create it's own map and you have to manage them separately. I have also ended up moving the base station a few times because of changes and remodeling I'm doing, and each time the map is completely lost and has to be re-learned. It doesn't really bother me because I just do clean all jobs and let it run until it's completely done. The other issue I've had which I don't think I can really blame on the roomba is that my bed has legs that are kind of an arc (sort of like a rainbow) from the mattress level to the floor. This creates "ramps" where the legs meet the floor. At least every other if not two out of three times the roomba will get stuck on the ramp. I wish it wouldn't, but I'm not going to get bent out of shape, I can see why it's a problem. I just close the bedroom door if I'm going to be out of the house and have it run unattended, and only vacuum the bedroom when I'm home to assist it if it becomes stuck.
Original review: 12/20/2020
I purchased two of these. One was for me, and one for my mother. I am keeping mine, returned the one for my mother. I have a cat, and while it watches the roomba or just goes downstairs, it doesn't really bother the cat. My mother has a toy poodle that is terrified of the roomba and will hide for hours and leaves it shaking. I had to return hers because of this, not due to a functionality issue. If your pets are high strung, you might want to make a test run with someone else's if possible.
Pro's:
1. Works like a charm. It has only been stuck once (hung up on curtains that were on the floor)
2. It took about three cleaning cycles to map the area. Once I did that, it cleans the floors while I'm at work and I come home to a clean house.
3. The app is easy to use. I can start a cleaning cycle while I'm away, and I get notifications on my app if there are any issues (Only useful if I am home to help, but still..) It was simple to set up. Download app, press two buttons on roomba, enter wi-fi password, and 2 minutes later you're done and ready to go. I couldn't ask for a better experience.
4. The app allows you to create zones in your house. You can do a clean all task or only do specific zones. You can also make no vacuum areas.
Con's:
1. It is somewhat loud, and when the roomba returns to the base it starts a VERY loud fan/vacuum in the base that sucks debris out of the roomba itself for a minute or so. If you sleep lightly, don't expect to run it while you're napping.
2. I moved the roomba once to the other side of the living room. When I did, it lost the map of the house completely. It needed to re-map the floor from scratch. It didn't affect me too much because I hadn't customized the map or set up and named zones, but for someone who had, this could be very irritating.
3. Other reviews complain about roomba's breaking and having to be replaced, especially after the 1 year warranty runs out. Because of this, I purchased the Assurian 3 year warranty. If comparing cost, consider the additional cost of the warranty if you have similar concerns.
4. It leaves about an inch of uncleaned area around the roomba base. You will need to move them and clean around the bases periodically or if noticable.
5. It gets 95% of the dirt off your floor. You will still need to vacuum once a month or so to ensure you clean under furniture, around the roomba base, baseboards, corners, nooks, and crannies. This is in the cons section, but no other robotic vacuum avoids this and I don't see it as a knock against the product, just something that you will deal with when you use ANY of these vacuums.
The roomba isn't the perfect set it and forget it robot. You need to tidy up before vacuuming by ensuring there isn't anything on the floor such as clothes/cloth, cables, or anything else that could get sucked into the roomba (be cautious of phone charging cables attached to a wall charger). I don't say this as a con, because it's not like you wouldn't have to do this if you were vacuuming manually, but other reviews complain about this. Be aware of the completely reasonable limitations. This does however somewhat limit the benefit of the app because you need to prep the area before setting the roomba loose. It limits your ability to just randomly set a job up when you're away from home. I'm not disappointed or upset about it, just a need to pre-plan. I also purchased the S9+ vs the S9 which comes with the cleaning tower for an additional $200. You can buy it either way so it doesn't affect the review per se, but I feel the cost is worth not having to perform maintenance on the roomba every time you vacuum.
The time I will save vs manually vacuuming a couple of times a week (cat fur) is well worth it over time. I chose the S9 instead of the 7 because of it's filtration and better corner cleaning. The hepa-lite filter seems to make a difference with cat dander as well. Supplies aren't unreasonable and appear that they will not be an onerous cost. I have hardwood and tile floors and do not use it on carpets so I can't make a judgement as to performance on carpets.
